The Dutch School in Atlanta

How did de Molenwiek start?

De Molenwiek was founded in 2001. The first school year started in 2002-2003. The engine behind the Molenwiek was Simpha Savelsbergh with the help of Jeannine Ritter-Ferweda.

Simpha Savelsbergh already taught Dutch within the Dutch community in Atlanta. Together they decided to set up a primary school in collaboration with the NOB Foundation. This collaboration with the NOB Foundation laid the foundation for high-quality education from the start.

Soon the school grew from 35 students in the first year to no less than 75 students in 2019. Founder Simpha died in 2008. In memory of Simpha, we raffle a children's book – the Simpha book – among the students every year. Since then - and still - countless teachers and parents have committed themselves to the school and ensured that the students enjoy coming to school every week to learn Dutch.

The school welcomes students with a Dutch and Belgian background. At de Molenwiek we see students who come to live in Atlanta as children of expat parents and return to the Netherlands, but also students who live here in Atlanta with their Dutch and / or American parents.
